Looking to build on his victory at the Canadian Open last week, Rory McIlroy took an early lead in the first round of the US Open on Thursday at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

However, Canadian Adam Hadwin came on in the afternoon to shoot a 4-under 66 to pace the course, one shot better than a group of five golfers – McIlroy, MJ Daffue, Joel Dahmen, Callum Tarren and David Lingmerth.

Jon Rahm, who won the tournament last year at Torrey Pines in San Diego to become Spain’s first US Open champion, recorded a 1-under 69.

Phil Mickelson – who has six major titles but has never won the US Open – shot an 8 of 78.
