United States vs. CANADA

  • USA are 5-2-2 against Canada all-time at the Concacaf U-20 Championship. The nations last met in 2013, a 4-2 quarter-final victory for the United States in Puebla, Mexico.
  • Canada have won the tournament twice, in 1986 and 1996. Since the tournament began regularly crowning a champion in 2009 (rather than just serving as a World Cup qualifier), the Reds didn’t make it past the quarter-finals.
  • Like the United States, Canada have participated in 25 of the 28 Concacaf U-20 Championships, but have only qualified for eight of the 22 FIFA U-20 World Cups. Canada automatically qualified as hosts of the 2007 U-20 World Cup and have not participated in the tournament since.
  • At the 2018 Concacaf U-20 Championship, Canada finished second in Group D with a 3-2-0 record and did not reach the qualification stage.
  • Fourteen of Canada’s 20 players are based in the country, with eight players hailing from Canadian MLS clubs and six from Canadian Premier League teams. Six players are based abroad in Germany (two), Brazil, England, France and Italy.

FLYING DEPARTURE FOR THE UNITED STATES:

US U-20 MYNT got off to a strong start in World Cup qualifying with a dominating 10-0 win over St. Kitts & Nevis on Saturday afternoon. Exceeding the Sugar Boyz 82% to 18%, USA started the scoring with two shots from Cade Cowell and Caden Clark midway through the first half, both awarded after VAR review. The floodgates opened late in the half, when USA scored four goals after the 42nd minute. The scoring continued after the break, when second-half substitute Paxten Aaronson , netted a brace in just three minutes and midfielder Niko Tsakiris netted his second in his first-ever international game for the United States.

OPENING STRUGGLES FOR CANADA:

Canada lost 1-0 to a well-organized defensive effort from Cuba in their first World Cup qualifier. Kevin Martin scored the only goal of the game at the end of the first half and despite Canada leading the West Indian team 71% to 29%, the Cuban defense was solid throughout the stretch. Cuba’s starting keeper Ismel Morgado was sent off in the 72nd and Martin was forced into the net as Cuba had already used all five substitutions, but a steely effort secured a three-point opener for the Leones del Caribe.

ROUTE TO HONDURAS:

The global COVID-19 pandemic canceled the planned 2020 Concacaf U-20 Championship in Honduras and the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia, while forcing a lengthy layoff in the overall programming of the tournament. national youth team. U-20 MYNT finally returned to the field in November 2021 at the Revelations Cup in Mexico, taking on top competition in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico under new head coach Mikey Varas.

Varas has held three training camps this year to prepare for World Cup qualifying. The team met in Florida in January for a domestic training camp and scrums against MLS sides, then traveled to Argentina in the March international window for games against the host and River Plate. In April, Varas held a training camp in Southern California in an effort to expand the pool of players.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT:

This year marks the 28th edition of the Concacaf U-20 Championship. The tournament began in 1962 as the Concacaf Youth Tournament, qualifying two teams for the FIFA U-20 World Cup from 1976 to 1994 and four teams from 1996 to present.

After a myriad of different formats over the years, the 2022 competition introduces a new 20-team tournament similar to Concacaf’s most recent U-17 Men’s and U-20 and U-17 Women’s Championships. Sixteen countries are divided into four groups of four, while four countries qualify directly for the round of 16 via a pre-qualifying tournament.

The top three from each group qualify for the round of 16, where they will be joined by the four teams from the pre-qualifiers. From there, it’s a single-elimination bracket until the tournament final. The four winners of the quarter-finals will qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia, while the two winners of the semi-finals will qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The United States have appeared in 25 of Concacaf’s 28 U-20 Championships, including every tournament since 1974, and have qualified for the U-20 World Cup in 16 of the previous 22 attempts. After missing the 2011 U-20 World Cup, the United States have played in the last four tournaments and are the only nation to reach the quarter-finals in the last three editions.

Concacaf and UEFA are the first confederations to organize qualifying tournaments for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.
