Jasmyn is the new solo project from the former singer-songwriter and singer of the critically acclaimed Toronto band Weaves, and ‘In The Wild’ is a clean slate for a debut album that breaks old patterns and starts afresh. . Released on June 3, Jasmyn worked with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton on the disc to create a sonic universe that reflected the ebbs and flows of a transitional chapter, where she could be free to create whatever she saw fit. just then.
“I feel like while we’re in existence, there’s a series of choices that we make to bring them to the next point in their lives,” Jasmyn says of the themes behind today’s kaleidoscopic new track. ‘Edge of Time’, where pulsating electronic rhythms guide a meditation on regret and endurance. “Maybe you move on and try something new or maybe you just stay put and feel stuck,” she continues. For me, this song is about going through your fears in hopes of experiencing a new way of being and seeing the world. It’s the push and pull dynamic of change and evolution, and how we can sometimes feel sadness when we shed the old version of ourselves.”
As the frontman of Weaves, Jasmyn has been a touring musician for the better part of a decade. Over the course of their career, the band has received two Polaris Music Prize nominations, two JUNO nominations for Alternative Album of the Year, and two SOCAN Songwriting Award nominations. The quartet have also performed around the world, including the Glastonbury Festival, and won critical acclaim as Fork, NPR, The Guardian and Elton John’s Rocket Hour.
When she left the band in 2020, it was an opportunity to slow down her pace of life and create a space that truly belonged to her, away from the hustle and bustle of constant touring and the noise of the city. After packing her life in Toronto, Jasmyn moved to Hamilton, where the serene sounds of Lake Ontario and a delicate, purposeful lifestyle inspired her to breathe and immerse herself in the outdoors. By taking time to feel her feet in the grass, the environment sparked a sense of freedom and saw Jasmyn build a portal to new energies and possibilities.
While there’s a continuous middle ground that weaves its way throughout the album, “In The Wild” makes way for the quieter, introspective moments, as well as the burgeoning, blossoming catharsis. “I wanted to create songs that would help people feel some kind of self-confidence,” she says.
This summer, Jasmyn will embark on some of her first performances under her own name, including two Canadian shows in June and a series of dates on the US East Coast in July and August with Brooklyn’s Air Waves. All upcoming dates are listed below.
