Regina’s Bennett, Saskatchewan’s Varga and Nyhus named players of the week

CALGARY — A pair of Rams and the Huskies point guard put the conference on notice after some impressive showings in Week 1.

Saskatchewan’s Mason Nyhus earns the first nomination of the season as Offensive Player of the Week after wreaking havoc in Calgary in the Dinos’ home opener.

He’s joined by Rams Anthony Bennett and Ryder Varga (Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively) after the duo were instrumental in upsetting the Manitoba Bisons on the road.

Nyhus started the CW season with a bang, finding receiver Daniel Perry for a 75-yard touchdown on the very first play of the game. He kept his foot on the gas from there, scouting four different receivers for four more touchdowns, becoming the first quarterback to post five major scores in a single game since Adam Sinagra in 2018.

Nyhus ran his attack down the field seamlessly, connecting for over 400 yards while avoiding a single interception. He converted 26 of 35 attempts showing why the Huskies are favorites to reclaim their CW title this season.

The defending Hardy Cup champions will be back in action Friday at 7 p.m. for their home opener against UBC (1-0). SaskTel customers can watch the game on channel 49 or 349, while TELUS customers can watch it on channel 997 or 998.

The game will also be broadcast on Canada West TV.

Meanwhile, Anthony Bennett was a sensation on the defensive end of the Regina/Manitoba game in Winnipeg. Bennett set the tone in Friday night’s game, knocking out Bisons quarterback Des Catallier in the first quarter, quickly threatening the Bisons’ offense.

He reminded them of his dangerous presence twice more. As the game swung back and forth, he scored two more sacks for a total loss of nine yards. He smothered the offense, fending them off three more times with three tackles for 12 wasted yards.

Bennett led his team with five solo tackles and one assisted, holding the line to allow his offense to overcome the Bisons’ first-half lead and upset the sixth-ranked U SPORTS team.

The Rams are now set for their home opener Friday at 7 p.m. when they face the Calgary Dinos 0-1.

SaskTel customers can catch the game on maxTV Local channels 48 or 348 on demand, while TELUS customers can catch the action on Optik TV channels 997 or 998.

Ryder Varga also made big plays in big moments on Friday, helping his Rams extend their lead in a close game through his special teams efforts.

With his team locked in a momentum swap game, Varga turned an ordinary game into a major score for Regina. He came out of nowhere to block a Bisons punt, allowing the Rams to recover and throw him back for a touchdown. The game gave the Rams a 26-17 lead, a lead they were able to hold onto to upset the Bisons in a convincing first week game.

The linebacker punctuated the evening with a last-minute interception to stifle any chance of the Bisons coming back.

Varga and the Rams are now set for their home opener Friday at 7 p.m. when they face the Calgary Dinos 0-1.

SaskTel customers can catch the game on maxTV Local channels 48 or 348 on demand, while TELUS customers can catch the action on Optik TV channels 997 or 998.
