The Canadian Football League averaged over 500,000 viewers per game in Week 7 for the first time in the 2022 season.

It took six weeks for the three-man league to hit the half-million mark, which is remarkable after bouncing back into the 400,000 range.

The 73-point home-and-away game between the Alouettes and the Rouge et Noir in the nation’s capital started the week with an entertaining game. More than 500,000 people tuned in to watch the Tiger-Cats and Lions grapple in a defensive battle before an understaffed Blue Bombers team stormed to Commonwealth Stadium and eliminated the Elks.

After a coronavirus outbreak ripped through the Roughriders, the Greens and Whites game against the Argonauts was pushed back from Saturday to Sunday night. The Riders are usually a viewership booster and that was the case again as Saskatchewan and Toronto combined to record the CFL’s third game with over 600,000 viewers this season.

The Riders have appeared in all three competitions with the previous two games taking place in Week 4 against Montreal (623,000) and Week 2 at Edmonton (679,000). Saskatchewan loves its Roughriders, as does the league and its broadcast partner TSN.

The Blue Jays undoubtedly stole eyeballs from the CFL as they fought their way to a three-game sweep against the Red Sox. 980,400 viewers watched on Friday evening with 1,056,800 and 1,197,000 on Saturday and Sunday afternoon respectively. The Jays scored 28 points to open the second half of the Major League Baseball season and totaled 40 points in the series to capture the attention of Canadian sports fans.

The CFL can only dream of regular season games averaging more than a million viewers, even if it was still a positive week for the league at three tries.
