Cancon was at the center of Prime Video’s presentation this week of upcoming releases for this year and beyond.
Streaming service Amazon announced a range of content developed and filmed in Canada at a press conference at Massey Hall in Toronto, including the campaign comedy-drama Lake.
Filmed in North Bay, Ont., the eight-part series which will debut June 17 stars Julia Stiles and Canadian actor Jordan Gavaris.
The story revolves around the character of Gavaris who wants to reconnect with his daughter at the family cottage, only to find that her parents have given it to her sister-in-law.
It is Amazon’s first original scripted Canadian comedy series.
“What we kinda poke fun at on the show is the gossip and the insular nature of these groups,” said Stiles, who plays Maisey-May, the sister-in-law.
“When you’re on the lake, it’s the only lake on the planet for these people and they’re all watching each other and getting hot from the charades.”
Stiles, known for her roles on TV shows like Dexter and riviera, told CBC News that she had wanted to be on a comedy series for some time.
“It was so nice to go to work every day and have it light and we were trying to make each other laugh and the audience laugh.”
Focus on cottage living
Canada is known for its vast outdoor spaces, but rarely plays out on screen. Netflix shows like Riverdalefilmed in Vancouver, takes place in the fictional city of the United States and Virgin River, also filmed in Vancouver, is played in Northern California.
“It’s one of the quintessential and iconic Canadian experiences in which everyone has their own way,” said Canadian writer Julian Doucet. “It was like very rich and fertile territory to explore.”
He added that the show draws on the experiences of his own cabin experiences, but also asks questions about how people participate in cabin country and how accessible it is for different people.
“Can we look at it in a certain way, put it under a microscope, laugh at ourselves, and find a new way in it while celebrating the things that unite us all?” Doucet said.
Other Canadian shows playing
There is also Tights, a show about a Canadian maple syrup producer who stumbles upon a plot to steal millions of dollars worth of candy. No release date has yet been announced.
Amazon has also set release dates for previously announced projects, including the Toronto revival of The children in the room sketch series on May 13 and a companion documentary about the Canadian comedy troupe on May 20.
