After two years in the dark due to the pandemic, the HSBC Canada World Series women’s rugby sevens tournament will return to the spotlight from April 30 to May 1 at Starlight Stadium.

The annual tournament returns “after a difficult time for our sport and the Canadian rugby community,” said Rugby Canada acting CEO Jamie Levchuk.

Two-day tournament passes go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. PT on canadasevens.com. Day tickets will be available in March.

“It’s unique in that few national teams can play in the same facility where they train,” said Canada’s interim head coach Jack Hanratty.

“There’s a real excitement and energy around it in our group.”

Rugby Canada is based in Langford.

The host Canadian team will be looking to rebuild after their dizzying fall from bronze medalist at the Rio 2016 Olympics to missing out on the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics.

“There were great conversations, and a lot of honesty, about the challenge ahead of us. We want to tackle this problem head-on,” Hanratty said.

Hanratty, who took over as interim head coach in October after a very disappointing ninth-place finish in Tokyo, will remain in the role for at least another eight months. The period will include Canada Sevens at Starlight, other HSBC World Series tournaments, Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Sevens World Cup qualifying tournament and hopefully World Cup Sevens in South Africa in September.

The Canadian men’s team is also based in Langford. The men’s HSBC World Series Canada Sevens tournament will take place April 16-17 at BC Place.
